Welcome to the Shimek Speedway Go-Kart Track!A little bit about how the track came to be.... Ron (Dad) got Bambi into racing go-karts at age 10 in the early 90's to prepare her for big cars like him and his dad did before him. Then, he built a practice track (now Shimek) so they could race there when FTA and Show Me Speedway wasn't running. Then he opened it to the public after expanding the size and adding lights and so on for every other Saturday night racing.
The racing families liked it and more racers came to run. They asked if, for the next year, it could be open every Saturday night. Needless to say, 17 years later, we are still racing karts every Saturday night with the families that come out to join us.
There is nothing like racing together with the family all in the pits. Nowhere else can you play side by side with your kids. And it will teach them the skills they will need to drive in the real world. It also helps hand eye coordination, patience, sportsmanship, mechanical skills and so much more. We hope to be around for many more racing seasons to come. Our daughter will be in a kart sooner then we can imagine and the generations of racers will live on.
Dad's legacy is to have a place for families to want to come race and have fun and feel safe to let them run around with other friends. In 2007, Dad passed away. We hope to continue that legacy in his honor and for all the ones that have passed who were a big part of the track. Ben and I don't do it for the money, and we strive to have cheap rates but great returns to the families, along with safe fun racing.
We both work full time and the track's income is to pay for its upkeep along with repairs, improvements and the banquet. We hope that everyone comes to have friendly competition and know that we are here to make the best calls that we can. We are here for all the racers not just a few. We don't play favorites and most know that if you know us well and the call is iffy, you will be the one going to the back.
Dad always told me that if there was a close call with me involved, I was the one being sent to the back because that is how it has to be. Our officials are volunteers and we appreciate all their time that they choose to spend out there making calls so we have a place to race.
We appreciate all the families who made it out so many times last year and waited through the rain on some nights hoping to get the races in. Thanks again. We always appreciate our families coming out to race with us. Racing will start at the end of April 2011.
We want to thank the many different people that helped dad design the track along with volunteering their time and donating items for the track expansions over the years. A big thanks to all the sponsors that helped us last year and the ones who will in years to come and to our volunteers that come out every Saturday night to help in the hot summer sun. Whether it is our track officials, dirt experts, our sign-in ladies, fuel, tech. man, announcer, 50/50, we thank you all. We couldn't survive without all of you and we will not forget you.
Thanks again,
The Smith Family
